Joining a Velo Club Rutland Ride

  • Before the ride, check that the distance and pace of the ride is right for you. If in doubt, contact the leader.

  • If you are new to the Club or to cycling, introduce yourself to the ride leader.

  • Ensure your bike is in good working order.

  • It is good practice to carry Emergency Contact details in a pocket/saddle bag.

  • Carry a spare inner tube (if appropriate to your bike), tyre levers and a pump or CO2 inflator – and know how to use them.

  • Dress for the weather and bring an extra layer.

  • Bring a drink, energy bar and some cash for refreshments.

  • If there is any chance that you might ride after ‘Lighting Up Time’, bring lights (which you have checked in advance). Ensure mudguards are fitted for winter rides.

  • Abide by the Highway and Countryside Codes.

  • Listen to the leader’s instructions.

  • Never ride more than two abreast, unless overtaking. Ride in single file if the road is narrow or traffic conditions dictate.

  • Ensure that you tell the leader if you intend to leave the ride whilst en-route.

  • If the pace is too fast for you, tell the leader.

  • Indicate, by hand signal, any hazards to other riders.

  • Shout ‘Slowing’ or ‘Stopping’ as appropriate.

  • Ride courteously and with consideration for all other road users.

  • Please do not wave cars past. In doing so you are unnecessarily taking on responsibility for their safe passage and you may put them and other road users and riders in the group at risk. If our groups are small enough and riding in a courteous and tidy manner it should not be necessary.
